VamoLa

Day of the Dead Festival
Nov. 2, 2007

Festival del Día de Los Muertos
  2 de Noviembre, 2007

Celebrate a traditional Mexican holiday at the Phinney Center. The annual PNA Day of the Dead Festival will feature a traditional procession, an art show in the Gallery, a community altar, music, dancing, bilingual readings, sugar skulls, paper flowers and Mexican hot chocolate. All of the activities are free and open to the public.

The event begins with a candlelight procession of masked performers and musicians who will gather at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church, 75th and Greenwood, starting at 6:45 pm. Led by VamoLá, a Brazilian drum and dance ensemble (www.vamola.org), the procession will dance its way to the Phinney Center where the group will also perform in Heart of Phinney Park, 67th and Phinney.

The schedule at the Center includes:
  • Music by guitar duo Enrique Wetzel and Laura Oviedo, who will perform a variety of music from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Mexico and Cuba.
  • Aztec dances performed by Danza Mexica Cuauhtemoc, Seattle's first Aztec dance community.
  • Bilingual readings by Mujer Entre Letras, a group of women dedicated to literature that promotes the Hispanic culture through the word in Washington State. The readings are co-sponsored by Centro Cultural Hispano Americano, a non-profit group that promotes the culture, folklore and traditions of all the Hispanic American countries through cultural, literary, educational and athletic events.

The Festival also includes an art show, themed Celebrating Our Ancestors and featuring art in a variety of media. The show includes art from six artists including Linda Lapping, Roger Shurtleff, Blanca Santander, Enrique Wetzel, Sarah Lovett, Rene Julio.

Both children and adults are also welcome to decorate sugar skulls, create paper flowers or add items to a community altar that will be on display in the Gallery through the month.

Funded in part by 4Culture and the City of Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs.
